BEAUTY | How to make your first lace front wig

If it seems like everyone and their mother is rocking lace front wig these days, you are spot on. The popular protective style has been sweeping the beauty community for a few years now, and thanks to YouTube and our favorite hair guru's, it has become easier than ever to rock the look. With a few plucks and a swipe of bleach, you can have an undetectable lace front wig that will make even you question your hair growth prowess.

Before wondering about how you're going to turn your frontal and bundles into a flawless wig, there are a few preparatory steps you need to take to make sure you're setting yourself up for success. We've curated some of the best, and most easy to understand YouTube tutorials so that you'll be on your way to creating a flawless lace front wig on your first try.

Bleaching the Knots
Unless you've ordered a pre-bleached lace front, you're going to have to bleach the knots. Charge it to the wig game. Since each hair strand is hand-tied into the lace base, there are visible knots at the end of each strand which looks like little black dots along your lace. Bleaching your frontal masks the black knots, and makes your hairline look more natural. It can be a messy process, so make sure you have all the necessary tools before you start.

Plucking The Lace
Plucking is the process of using a tweezer to pluck out excess hairs around the frontal to make it less bulky. A few years ago, lace frontal aficionados would rock their frontal out the box with no customization. Hence why celebrities like Lil' Kim and Beyonce's hairline used to always look a bit off. Now that we have better technology, everyone's lace game has been on the glow up. What we love most about this video is the tip about taking a picture of your hairline before starting so you have a guide you can easily reference, instead of continually looking in the mirror.

Constructing the Lace Front Wig
It's the moment you've been waiting for. Now that you've plucked, dyed, and laid your frontal to perfection, it's time to turn that pretty lady into a wig that's going to have even the natural-haired sistas questioning your growth skills. You want to avoid any and all bulkiness, so make sure everything is flat from your braid pattern to the number of bundles you put in your head.

Creating Your Part
All lace fronts were not created equal. Some come with a pre-made part down the middle, to the side, with multiple parts, or with no parting at all (also known as a “free part”). With the free part frontal in particular (beahairs frontals give you the freedom to freely part your hair), you'll get to choose where you want your part to lay and create it. You can do this before you create the full wig or after. We'll show you both methods so you can decide which one works best for you. The below tutorial is for a side part, however you can mimic the same steps for any part you'd like.

Creating Natural Edges
One of the main complaints from newbie lace front wig wearers is the unnatural hairline. No one's hairline is full from ear to ear, and it'll be the first indicator that you're wearing a wig. Adjust your lace front accordingly. If you have thinner natural edges, then pluck your lace front's hairline to get it to a more realistic density. Peakmill does a great tutorial showing how to not only create edges and get those lace baby virgin hair on fleek, but also how to make a natural hairline.
